Statement & Bio

 Timothy Harding investigates the relationship between pictorial space, three-dimensional forms, and the raw materials traditionally used in painting and drawing. Spanning painting, drawing, and installation, his work pulls from a universal imagery of lines, scribbles, gestural marks, and hard-edge geometric forms such as grids that recall mid-century painting. In his recent paintings, patterns and three-dimensional forms spill across the canvas and float in spaces of illusory depth. Informed by Harding’s longstanding interests in perception and the phenomenal; color, light, and shadow; qualities of surface and sheen; and the opacity of form, his paintings evoke abstract undefined spaces.

Harding has exhibited throughout the United States, amassing more than twenty solo shows since 2007. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Texas Christian University in 2010, and his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Texas Woman’s University in 2008. Currently a Professor of Art at Tarleton State University, Harding has received grants from the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Dallas Museum of Art and participated in residencies at 77Art, Wassaic Project, and the Vermont Studio Space. He has co-curated eight exhibitions and was a member of HOMECOMING! Committee, a collective of artists and creatives interested in shaping cultural discourse. Harding’s work has been featured across publications including New American Paintings, Arts and Culture Texas, Surface, Patron Magazine, D Magazine, and Glasstire.
